your fridge, your business

Privacy policy

Last updated 15 October 2026

The short version

  • Your shelf photos never leave your phone. They're deleted once you've checked the list.
  • The list of what's in your fridge and your rescue record are saved to your account, so they follow you to a new phone.
  • We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.
  • Delete your account and we delete everything we hold about you.

ShopSmart is made by Sean Kerr Consulting Pty Ltd (ABN 49 129 661 178), an Australian company ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the ShopSmart app and website collect, why, and what you can do about it. We follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

What we collect

Your account. You sign in with Apple or Google. They give us an account ID and your email address. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we only see the private relay address Apple creates. If you choose to share your name, we keep that too.

Your fridge list. The name and amount of each item, its estimated expiry date, whether it came from a scan or you added it by hand, and when it changed.

Your rescue record. When you cooked something that was about to go off: the recipe, the ingredients it used, and their estimated value in Australian dollars.

Scan details. When you scanned and how many shelves. Not the photos.

Emails you send us. If you contact support, we keep the conversation so we can help.

Crash and error reports. When something goes wrong in the app, it sends a report to Sentry, the service we use to find and fix bugs: your phone model, operating system, app version and what the app was doing when the problem happened. Reports don't include who you are, your fridge list or any photos.

We don't collect your location, contacts or advertising ID, and we don't use advertising trackers.

Your photos and the scanner

The first time you scan, ShopSmart downloads its scanner (about 440 MB) to your phone. From then on, recognising what's on your shelves happens entirely on your phone. Shelf photos are never uploaded to us or anyone else, and they're deleted from your phone once you've finished checking the list.

The camera is only used when you open it to scan. You can turn camera access off at any time in your phone's settings and still add items by hand.

How we use it

  • To run ShopSmart: keep your fridge list and rescue record in sync across your phones, and suggest what to cook.
  • To answer you when you contact support.
  • To keep the service secure and working, and to meet our legal obligations.

We don't use your information for advertising, and we don't sell it.

Where it's stored

Your account, fridge list and rescue record are stored with Amazon Web Services in Sydney, Australia, encrypted in transit and at rest. A copy also lives on your phone so ShopSmart works offline.

When you sign in, Apple or Google handles that step under their own privacy policies, and may process it outside Australia.

Crash and error reports are stored by Sentry in the European Union for up to 90 days, then deleted.

Who we share it with

Only the services that run ShopSmart for us: Amazon Web Services (hosting), Apple and Google (sign-in and app distribution), Sentry (crash and error reports) and Proton (our email). They may only use it to provide that service. We'll also disclose information if Australian law requires it.

How long we keep it

For as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, we delete your account, fridge list and rescue record straight away, and revoke ShopSmart's access to your Apple or Google sign-in. Our automatic backups are kept for 7 days, so any copy of your data in them is destroyed within 7 days. Support emails are deleted 12 months after your last message.

Your choices and rights

  • See and fix it. Everything we hold is in the app. Ask us for a copy any time.
  • Delete it. In the app under Account, then Delete account, or without the app.
  • Complain. Tell us first and we'll respond within 30 days. If you're not happy with the answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

ShopSmart is for people aged 13 and over.

Changes to this policy

If we change it, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app before it applies.
